Working it out!

Recently I read about a method of exercise called high intensity interval training. Or maybe everyone's already heard of it besides me, but basically you do something like running or biking in intervals of easy and hard. For example, you could do a couple minutes easy, then 40 seconds all out, then go back to easy. And repeat for several cycles. The research suggests that you get health benefits comparable to traditional aerobic exercise but in far less time, even just 3 times per week. When Adam and I tried this though, we ended up totally nauseous. I was talking about this with my friend Ben from PUC, who as it turns out did his masters thesis on this very topic. What he used to do us 20 minutes total, one on and one off. And the nausea was from going too hard without gradual conditioning, and our heart rates getting too high off the bat. So anyway all of this is to say we are earnestly trying to get in shape for our backpacking trip this summer! Or else I won't be able to keep up with Papa and Kevin. And to show Papa we are still using the bike!

  1. Good for you guys!!! ...But wait, what are those boxes I see in the background?!!! You are supposed to drink water! They also say that chocolate milk enhances your workout somehow.

  2. Mama. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I've tried that training a bit with HIIT, and still do it to some degree, but it is difficult. The Body for Life exercise program is based on that theory. The other component you guys might want to add is some strength training, which is important in a lot of ways, one being osteoporosis prevention. I found a cheap bowflex machine on craigslist that works great. Free weights is also an option, but a little more likely to lead to muscle/tendon injury if not done very correctly.

Did you see that the original research on HIIT came from Japan? I don't remember details, but it was from a study of Japanese olympic athletes.
