Saturday

Saturday was fantastic. Friday I kind of imploded on myself because we were in the apartment all day and I needed to get outside to do something so Saturday we packed a picnic and went to the park, where I found these pokey miracles that I can't stop looking at. They are so symmetric and sharp and I just want to touch them but there is no safe way to handle them without getting stabbed. Then we came home and did some reading/painting/computer game playing until it was time to go see a movie. We went to this old theater in downtown Redlands and saw a documentary called "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," about a world-renowned Japanese sushi chef who has been making sushi for 75 years. The theater only contained four other people, apparently the original event scheduled for that night had been cancelled so they hadn't had time to advertise as they normally would have. But if you ask me, 6 is the perfect number of people in a movie theater. The movie was great for the sushi but even more for the very Japanese ethic of put your head down and work quietly until every ceremonious movement becomes perfectly choreographed, and then work some more because it's still not perfect. Sometimes the things society tells us to spend our time doing are not fulfilling or interesting to me, and in that sense it's always interesting to me to see someone who eschews all of that and forms their daily lives around only what they deem is necessary and important. Though the movie, perhaps in a very Japanese way, did not focus at all on the toll this perfectionism and focus must have taken on his marriage and children.
And then the next day we got the box full of curry and chocolate and a textbook! among other things and Adam and I were both very happy. Honestly I forgot they made curry in those heatable packs, that is going to revolutionize things around here in a small way.

  1. It's good to get outdoors, isn't it. Today Kevin and I went hiking on a 7.5 mile trail around Liberty Lake, along with the Kris/Paula/boys and Matt/Thad/younger sister Maddie. Mama was at a graduation party for a girl from church. It was good to be hiking. I'll post photos when Kris gets some to me that he took.

This week will be a busy one here. I've got boards on Thursday, and Kevin and mama are leaving for the 6th grade trip to Seattle tomorrow for 3 days. I think I've got it hard, but it really sucks to be mocha.

The packs of curry are good, but in Japan you can find ones that include beef (or some meat labelled as such), but I've never seen them sold in the states, even in LA.

    I love your writing.
